Rumi’s Thanksgiving Poem

November 20, 2012

Thanksgiving is sweeter than bounty itself.
One who cherishes gratitude does not cling to the gift!
Thanksgiving is the true meat of God’s bounty;
the bounty is its shell,
For thanksgiving carries you to the hearth of the Beloved.
Abundance alone brings heedlessness,
thanksgiving gives birth to alertness…
The bounty of thanksgiving will satisfy and elevate you,
and you will bestow a hundred bounties in return.
Eat your fill of God’s delicacies,
and you will be freed from hunger and begging.

– Jalaluddin Rumi

Happy Thanksgiving 2012!!!

O Lord, in these hard times, we thank You for the bounty of our table, when so many in the world go hungry.
And we thank You for our family and friends, when so many in the world walk alone.

Amin.

Happy Islamic New Year 1434/2013 :)

November 14, 2012

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:

HAPPY NEW YEAR 1434!!!

The Islamic New Year begins at sunset on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 in North America and ends at sunset on Thursday, November 15, 2012

The Islamic year begins on the first day of Muharram, and is counted from the year of the Hegira, the year in which the Prophet Muhammad (saw) emigrated from Mecca to Medina (A.D. July 16, 622). The Islamic New Year is based on the revolutions of the Moon. Thus, Al-Hijra is only 354 days long.

At the time of sunrise many recite the following dua, or prayer, on the day of the New Year:

O’ Allah, the New Year has begun. You are the Eternal Master. I ask You to make available to me its good and the benefits which are in it. I seek refuge with You from its evil and the disadvantages which are in it. I request You to let me procure the provisions I need and discharge the activities I take up in this year.

Ameen!

The Greatest Gift

November 11, 2012

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:

“If you want to awaken all of Humanity, then awaken all of yourself,
if you want to eliminate the suffering in the world,
then eliminate all that is dark and negative in yourself.
Truly, the greatest gift you have to give is that of your own self-transformation.”

– Lao Tzu

Ya Haqq!

Note: According to a recent comment, the quote actually comes from a translation of another Taoist work called the Hua Hu Ching (Huahujing), which, although attributed to Lao Tzu, was actually written some 500 years after Lao Tzu lived, by Taoist Wang Fou.
