Simply for Love!

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:

All this burning for God… All this submitting to his trials and suffering with patience and reverence, the terrible afflictions. My my my… My pain, my suffering, my agonies, and particularly – my tormented soul. I become ashamed that I might be doing so much of this. Perhaps God might be happier if we were simply kinder to our spouses and children, and went about the daily traffic of our lives with a glad heart. Oh the power of a kind word! Perhaps we might best exhibit devotion in our daily, mundane, oh so ordinary acts simply for the sake of doing so, simply for Love, without even the idea of gaining favor in God’s eyes. Let me sing the daily sacrifices of Love for the sake of Love! Oh, let us love those we are traveling with as much as we possibly are able, and let us show them this love with every thing they bring to us. Let us show what we truly believe to be God’s mercy in our kindness. Let us not turn an angry shoulder or leave them unconsoled. Let us be grateful for even the opportunity to love them! What a gift! And let us do this year in and year out on the long path of our ordinary days and be glad of it!

    Asalaamu alaikum.

P’s “simple” heartfelt journal entry reads like a well-worked piece that many of us would struggle to compose. Such beauty and poetry in something that were clearly just private thoughts!

    Salaam Dear Brothers and Sisters:

Thank you all for the kind comments, and my wife thanks you too :) I am indeed blessed with such a wife, whose every act is based on love. She is a Mama Darvish in the truest sense, and of course a much better poet and writer than I am :)

    Mashahallah irving bhai.

I dont fully understand though? Isn’t the highest form of love for the sake of Allah SWT? I am not very smart so please explain!

  14. Irving says:

    Salaam Dear Brother:

Of course love for the sake of Allah is the highest form of love, and that makes you very smart indeed :) Yet how does that love of Allah manifest in this life? A darvish strives to make every act in life reflect that love, in both words and more importantly, in deeds.

Sufis try to worship and love Allah by loving and serving all of His creation, and for a man and wife, that includes each other in a close and special bond. My master says that every darvish should get married, because it is a great teacher of love and selflessness that leads to Allah. At least, that is the intention :)

Curiously enough I was discussing this with an elderly neighbour only yesterday. I spotted her looking cold and frail at the bottom of our hill and gave her a lift up in the car. We sat for ages in the car talking, and she told me what a tough time she’s been having lately – just glad to be able to share it all. `Why do we have children?’ she asked in a moment of anguish. But we both knew the answer staright away – it’s what mothers do – and it makes us closer to life, to spirit, to what is real. And somehow by doing it we hold the whole fabric of everything together.

What a wise woman, your wife!
    I especially loved this part:

Oh, let us love those we are traveling with as much as we possibly are able, and let us show them this love with every thing they bring to us.

    Ameen to that!
