Salaam and Greetings of Peace:
December 10th, would have been the 85th birthday of Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh (12/10/1926 – 10/10/2008), the late and beloved Master of the Nimatullahi Sufi Order. In his memory, this poem is dedicated.
Love is the answer
to every question
An ocean emerging
from a drop
This you taught us, by your
every action, every word,
The revealed science
of the heart, the key
to every door that is
never locked to anyone
To serve the One,
serve all, you said,
Eat but a little,
Feed the soul instead
As long as life
remains, and then
The drop returns
again to the Ocean of
Love, of love, of love
Ya Pir! Ya Haqq!

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:
It is related that early one morning many years ago, while still living in Iran, Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh, Master of the Nimatullahi Sufi Order, awoke and told his dervishes that he would be traveling to another khaniqah across the country, and that all who wanted to accompany him should be ready to depart in an hour.
Urgent calls were made and every car that was available from any source was soon filled with darvishes. They formed a long caravan on the highway, driving through the morning. The Master sat in the passenger’s seat of the first car, and after a few hours, they were traveling through the desert part of Iran.
Suddenly the Master commanded the car to pull over. The driver stopped by the side of the road, and all the cars behind them pulled over also. The Master got out and motioned for everyone else to stay by their cars. After an hour, he looked in the distance across the sands, but nothing could be seen. Master shaded his eyes with his hand, and after a while there appeared a figure in the distance, walking slowly towards the highway. When the figure came closer, it could be seen that it was a boy, perhaps twelve years old, and Master called him over.
“Your father is sick,” the Master said.
“Yes!” the startled boy replied. “I am going to find a doctor. How did you know? Who are you?”
“I am a doctor. Here, take this to the pharmacy in the nearby town,” the Master said, and he wrote a prescription on a pad he took out of his pocket. The young boy thanked the Master profusely and hurried on his way.
The dervishes were astounded. The younger ones whispered questions to each other. The older ones knew better and remained silent.
Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh was a practicing psychiatrist, having both a medical degree and a PhD in psychology. He joined the Beloved in October of 2008, after having been Master of the Nimatullahi Sufi Order for fifty-five years.

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:
My Master taught me a lesson:
“Any moment you are negligent
in remembrance of God
is a moment spent in denial of God.”

O moon-faced Beloved,
the month of Ramadan has arrived
Cover the table
and open the path of praise.
O fickle busybody,
it’s time to change your ways.
Can you see the one who’s selling the halvah
how long will it be the halvah you desire?
Just a glimpse of the halvah-maker
has made you so sweet even honey says,
“I’ll put myself beneath your feet, like soil;
I’ll worship at your shrine.”
Your chick frets within the egg
with all your eating and choking.
Break out of your shell that your wings may grow.
Let yourself fly.
The lips of the Master are parched
from calling the Beloved.
The sound of your call resounds
through the horn of your empty belly.
Let nothing be inside of you.
Be empty: give your lips to the lips of the reed.
When like a reed you fill with His breath,
then you’ll taste sweetness.
Sweetness is hidden in the Breath
that fills the reed.
Be like Mary – by that sweet breath
a child grew within her.
- Rumi

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:
It is related that two religious fundamentalists once came to visit our late Master, Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh (may Allah bless his exalted soul and raise his rank to those of His nearest beloveds.) They had bristly whiskers and Master invited them to stay for lunch. One of them sought to provoke the Master by asking how he could become a Sufi
Dr. Nurbakhsh said, “Cut off your beard.”
“But,” protested the man, “what about him?” pointing to Mr. Niktab, the Sheikh of Sheikhs, who had a long white beard.
“Ah!” The Master said, “But his is not a beard of religion. His is a beard of love.”
Grow a beard made of love, O darvish
and claim the name of lover,
or do not pretend to the circle of the Friend.
Ya Haqq!
Note: With gratitude and special thanks to Terry Graham for the original telling of this true story on the Nimatullahi Sufi Order website.

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:
In my younger years, whenever I walked down a street, beggars would let a hundred people pass and unerringly come right up to me, no matter how much I scowled or tried to look uninterested. What did they see in me, these ragged men and women who could read faces so well? Perhaps I looked like a soft touch, an easy mark, a sucker, a fool who was easily parted with his money. Invariably I would give them a few coins, resenting it all the while. Did they use it to buy alcohol, drugs, food? I was deeply suspicious of the cause of their poverty, and felt robbed of both money and pride.
What a fool I truly was, and feel rightly ashamed of such a miserly spirit, which made me the greater beggar. After many years on the Path of Love, I have learned this at least; the giving of zakat for Eid, or of charity in general, is either from generosity of spirit or it is nothing. God alone is the judge of another’s heart or intention.
As the Master says in the Sufi novel, Master of the Jinn:
“The generous heart always has enough to give. It is the miserly in spirit who believe they never have enough to be generous. It is not lack of possessions that leads to spiritual poverty, nor prayer and fasting by themselves. It is in the abandonment of self-absorption, and in constant remembrance and reflection that the heart becomes detached. Then the hands gladly open their grasp on worldly things and cleave to God.”
And the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, an ignorant man who is generous is dearer to God than a worshipper who is miserly.” – (Al-Tirmidhi )
May Allah bless you all with generosity of spirit, whose foundation is Love, and whose Source is the Most Loving, the Most Generous. Amin.
Ya Haqq!

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:
I have been “Tagged” by our dear Sister at the wonderful Almiskeenah blog. It is a book meme tag, and the rules are as follows.
1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages)
2. Open the book to page 123
3. Find the 5th Sentence.
4. Post the next 3 sentences
5. Tag 5 people
As it turns out, the nearest book to me was a copy of my own, Master of the Jinn: A Sufi Novel, which I am rereading for typos and errors to correct in the next edition, and in the foreign language editions coming out later this year. Here then are sentences six, seven and eight from page 123.
The ancient faqir seemed lost in thought for a moment, watching the light slant across the waves as it was absorbed by the sea. His face and beard were turned red as the waters, as if he too were absorbing the light. Without turning, he said, “Verily, God’s mercy precedeth His wrath.”
I am tagging Sister Suroor, Sister Sumera, Brother Katib, Brother Abdur Rahman, and Brother Sadiq. May Allah bless them all, and may they forgive me :)
Ya Haqq!
PS: If you would like to read the whole book, order HERE, or get a FREE EBOOK of Master of the Jinn in pdf format. Just email me at Irvingk57 at aol dot com and write Ebook in the subject line, and I will be happy to send it to you :)
