Surat Al-Ikhlas – A Hadith and Reminder

August 17, 2011

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:

Abu Said narrated that he heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say to his Companions, “Is any one of you incapable of reciting one-third of the Qur’an in one night?” They considered it burdensome and said: “O Messenger of Allah, which one of us can afford to do that?” He said,Surat Al-Ikhlas (He is God, the One) is equivalent to one-third of the Qur’an.”   - (Bukhari)

Surat Al-Ikhlas is the 112th Sura of the Qur’an. It is a short declaration of tawhid, God’s absolute unity, consisting of 4 ayat. Al-Ikhlas means “the purity” or “the refining,” meaning to remain pure and faithful, or a state of purging one’s soul of non-Islamic beliefs, such as paganism and polytheism.

Such a purification is the burning away of all of the worldly misunderstandings, concerns and desires that separate us from the One; the One and Only upon whom we depend, the One and Only who is our foundation rock, the Eternal One and Only.

Surat Al-Ikhlas

وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ ٤

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Say: He is Allah, the One and Only!
Allah, the Eternal, Absolute;
He begetteth not, nor is He begotten.
And there is none like unto Him.

Advice to Husbands

November 3, 2010

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:

I recently came across this list of five hadiths, or sayings of the Prophet (SAW), which give advice to Muslim husbands on good behavior during marriage, and thought I would share it, since they would apply to all husbands of any religion.

Advice to Husbands

Jabir narrated that the Prophet, peace be upon him, gave these instructions in his sermon during the Farewell Pilgrimage: “Fear God regarding women; for you have taken them [in marriage] with the trust of God.”
[Mishkat]

Narrated by Aisha, ‘God’s messenger said: “Among the believers who show most perfect faith are those who have the best disposition, and are kindest to their families.”’
[Tirmidhi]

Narrated by Abu Huraira, God’s messenger said: “The believers who show the most perfect faith are those who have the best disposition and the best of you are those who are best to their wives.”
[Tirmidhi]

Aisha has related that the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, would enter the house with a pleasing disposition and a smile on his lips.
[Uswa-i-Hasana]

Narrated by Al-Aswad: “I asked Aisha, `What did the Prophet, peace be upon him, do at home?’ Aisha said, `He used to work for his family and when he heard the call for the prayer, he would go out.'”
[Bukhari]

Of Speaking, Silence, and Generosity to Neighbor and Guest

July 9, 2008

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:

The Prophet (pbuh) said:

“Let him who believes in God and the Last Day either speak good or keep silent, and let him who believes in God and the Last Day be generous to his neighbor, and let him who believes in God and the Last Day be generous to his guest.”

- Hadith reported by Abu Hurayrah and recorded by Imam Bukhari and Muslim.
