The Cup of Jesus

January 30, 2008

The cup of Jesus
is within you

There is no grail
but the heart

All the parables
say only one thing

If you love your children
you love God

If you love one another
you love God

If you love your enemies
you love God

If you love
you love God

The New Morn – A Father/Daughter Poem

January 27, 2008

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:

This poem by our dear Sister Priya in tribute to her father moved me to tears of love and joy, and I received her permission to share it with you:

_______

In Bengal, India daughters are very much loved and adored by their fathers. They are often lovingly called Maa [mother], as if the father is a little child, to be taken care of, scolded and loved by the tiny mother …
It is a unique relationship. I have tried to capture the mood …hope my readers like it and strengthen the bond with their lovely daughters.

The New Morn

She was sitting on the floor ,
with all her tiny cups n saucers ……..making tea.
” baba …..o…baba….again you are sleeping?
pouting her sweet lips two little hands tugging a sleeve of my shirt,
as i was dozing in the warm morning sun in my chair
with the newspaper in my hand.

‘taste the tea’ she commanded ..
tea made of muddy water…
pride in her eyes ,
sweat glistening on her forehead.
i pretended to sip the tea,
she was hovering like a mother hen over her only baby …..

‘hurry up baba we will go to the market’
excitedly my little Maa said.
i smiled …..
hand in hand we went to the garden.
she picked up lots of different leaves ,
pebbles and dust lovingly, to cook for her son….
in her small pots and pans.

”baba….oh …baba can’t you sit still?’
she was serving dust rice, pebble meat and leaves
vegetable on a plate taken from her mom’s treasure.

‘after lunch we will go to the seabeach ‘
now she was thinking of going out …
different coloured dirt and dust,
made a rainbow on her dress.

i smiled lovingly…my little precious …
sea is not far….
she ran against the wind … barefeet laughed n
giggled.
sat on my lap ..told me all her stories all made
up…
where the prince and the princess,
goblin and the wizard all became one.
curly hair covered the tired, angelic face…
tiny little fingers hold on to my hand.
my Maa is feeling sleepy.

as i hugged her in my bosom n looked afar,
the sun was slowly going down the horizon,
dusk is setting in,
a beautiful fragrance engulfing us.
another year passing by, slowly very slowly,
my little angel, my two year old daughter
will see a bright new morn tomorrow…..

The Prayer of Guidance

January 21, 2008

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:

The Prophet (pbuh) has said:

“If one of you is concerned about some practical undertaking, or about making plans for a journey, he should perform two Rakats (cycles) of voluntary prayer. Then he should say the following dua:”

O Allah! I seek Your guidance by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power; I have none. And You know; I know not. You are the Knower of hidden things.

O Allah! If in Your knowledge this matter is good for my religion, my livelihood and my affairs, immediate and in the future, then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if in Your knowledge this matter is bad for my religion, my livelihood and my affairs, immediate and in the future, then turn it away from me, and turn me away from it. And ordain for me the good wherever it may be, and make me content with it.

- Called the Salat-ul-Istikhara, or The Prayer of Guidance, it is adapted from the excellent and beneficial Simply Islam blog.

Let Me Do It Now

January 14, 2008

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:

We shall pass through this world but once.
Therefore, any good thing I can do,
For any living being,
Let me do it now.
Let me not defer it or neglect it,
For I shall not pass this way again.

Darud Taj – Invocation of Blessings Upon the Prophet (pbuh)

January 10, 2008

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:

The following is the translation of a famous invocation of blessings upon the Prophet entitled Darud Taj or “Invocation of the Crown” which is especially well known in the Indian subcontinent.

O Allah, send blessings and Peace upon our Master and Patron Muhammad
The Owner of the Crown and the Ascent and the Buraq and the Standard,
The Repeller of Affliction and Disease and Drought and Illness and Pain.
His name is written on high, served and engraved in the Tablet and the Pen,
The Leader of All, Arabs and non-Arabs,
Whose body is sanctified, fragrant, and pure,
The Sun of Brightness, the Full Moon in Darkness, The Cave of Refuge for Mortals, the Lamp That Dispels the Night
The Foremost One in the Highest Fields, the Light of Guidance,
The Best-Natured One, The Intercessor of Nations, The Owner of Munificence and Generosity
Allah is his Protector, Gabriel is his servant. The Buraq is his mount ,
The Ascent is his voyage. The Lote-Tree of the Furthermost Boundary is his station,
Two Bow-Lengths or Nearer is his desire,
His desire is his goal, and he has found his goal,
The Master of the Messengers, the Seal of the Prophets,
The intercessor of sinners, the friend of the strangers,
The Mercy for the Worlds,
The rest of those who burn with love, the goal of those who yearn,
The sun of knowers, the lamp of travellers, The light of Those Brought Near,
The friend of the poor and destitute,
The master of Humans and Jinn,
The Prophet of the Two Sanctuaries,
The Imam of the Two Qiblas,
Our Means in the Two Abodes,
The Owner of Qaba Qawsayn,
The Beloved of the Lord of the Two Easts and the Two Wests,
The grandfather of al-Hasan and al-Husayn,
Our patron and the patron of Humans and Jinn:
Abu al-Qasim MUHAMMAD Son of `Abd Allah,
A light from the light of Allah.
O you who yearn for the light of his beauty,
Send blessings and utmost greetings of peace
Upon him and upon his Family.

Ameen.

Being Thought Full of God

January 5, 2008

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:

Thoughts that do not include God are thought less, for all thought arises in response to His world in His universe and in this life He has given you. Saying Bismillah (in the name of God), before eating or performing a task great or small; saying Inshallah (God willing), that His will be done in the future and not your own; saying Alhamdulillah (All praise is God’s alone), that one recognizes that all power and strength and goodness come from Him; all these bring God into our consciousness, into our thoughts and actions. And if these thoughts and actions are done for God’s sake and not our own, it makes of them a true blessing.

This is also the essence of adab, of courtesy and character and true modesty, that it is done for God’s sake, and not out of cultural habit or shame.

Verily, to surrender to God in thought and deed is the beauty and truth of Islam, and the goal of the Sufi path.

Therefore remember Me, I will remember you, and be thankful to Me, and do not be ungrateful to Me. (2:152)

Those are they on whom are blessings and mercy from their Lord, and those are the followers of the right course. (2:157)
