HERE is a fascinating YouTube video of what I believe is a Naqshbandi Shaykh in Afghanistan instructing dervishes on zekr. It is narrated in French, which I do not speak, so if anyone can translate, please do so in the comments. Its old black and white format makes it seem timeless.
assalam alaikum Irving bhai, it may be that the shaykh is a Qaderi, [or perhaps Chishti] as he is instructing the murid in the Zikr Nafi ithbat (the Negation & the Affirmation) i.e. la ilaha illallah. The Naqshbandis do not normally stress this Zikr, preferring the silent Zikr isme zat, the Divine Name ‘Allah’ silently repeated in the heart in tune with the heartbeat.
will inshallah translate the bits of the french that I managed to understand soon!
‘the meditation essentially consists of focusing all one’s energy, mental emotional & physical, on the repetition of the name of God, or the Quranic formula that only God is worthy of worship.’
etc
Thank you for your comments and efforts :) I enjoyed the video very much, and a friend who watched it said it ended with the words, “I search for God everywhere, and found him at home waiting for me.”

As sa;am aleykum wa ramatullahi wa barakatuh,
I’d translate the commentary, but it’s really not all that interesting… French orientalist stuff.
