Little Girls, Like Butterflies
Brightly colored wings
Of silk and ribbons
Floating softly
Secret giggles like
A song of life
Touching the heart
Little girls, like butterflies
Need no excuse
- Irving Karchmar, 1977 (for Rebecca)
Alhamdulillah! Today I became a grandfather. My lovely step-daughter gave birth this morning to a beautiful baby girl. This is my wife’s first grandchild also, and she is overjoyed. The parents haven’t picked a name yet, but I offer the above poem out of love, originally written at my own daughter’s birth.
Ya Haqq!

Wow! A grandfather eh? Ma sha Allah! Perhaps we should call you Poppa Dervish? (Only joking of course). ;)

Oh, Irving, this is such marvelous news!
(I don’t think I’ve ever used the word “marvelous” before in writing, but this seems such an apposite time. =))
May your little butterfly granddaughter be granted a life filled with all that is beautiful and blessed and good! And may she be a source of joy to all those who know her, and may she spread light and the song of life wherever she goes. Ameen.
I think it’s so lovely that the poem you wrote thirty years ago is so fitting, once more.

Asalaamu alaikum.
Ah, Baba Irving has a good ring! And I am not opposed to using it since you have taught me in many ways as a father does.
Mabruk on your healthy beautiful granddaughter, may Allah bless her with iman, health, and everything she needs in this life and her future, ameen.
And this is such a lovely and sweet poem too. :)

Congrats Brother Irving!! May Allah swt bless you and your family.
I wonder what are some of your favorite names for boys and girls… erm, no particular reason for asking. ok maybe. so yeah, what say you?
salaams :)
March 7, 2007 at 7:00 pm
Well, dear Sister Nisa, I liked the name Quinn for a girl or boy, and sure, enough I just found out that they named the new baby Quinn :) They wanted an Irish name, since they are both of old Irish heritage. For a boy, they were thinking of Roman, which is a good boys name, and unique. I also like Quincy for both boy or girl, so I have a Q thing lol.
I personally like Sonia, my mother’s name, which means the pretty one, and Jack, my father’s name, both not used much any more.
Romeo is also a good boy’s name, though he may get beat up a lot lol.
So…. when are you expecting?
Ya Haqq!

Salaams Br. Irving - Hey, Quinn is a pretty name!! I’m actually due in couple of months with my first! I still dont know what gender it is and i certainly dont have a final name. I seem to have a thing for names with the letter “z.” Zain, Zayd, Zahara.. I really like Roman and Romeo, as well as, Rumi and layla … but nothing feels just right. I wonder if that was the case with anyone else. I’m hoping once i see the baby the name will just pop up! or else, i’ll have to call he/she Jr. for a while. heh.
thanks for the input!! :)
