Brightly colored wings
Of silk and ribbons
Floating softly
Secret giggles like
A song of life
Touching the heart
Little girls, like butterflies
Need no excuse
- Irving Karchmar, 1977 (for Rebecca)
Alhamdulillah! Today I became a grandfather. My lovely step-daughter gave birth this morning to a beautiful baby girl. This is my wife’s first grandchild also, and she is overjoyed. The parents haven’t picked a name yet, but I offer the above poem out of love, originally written at my own daughter’s birth.
Ya Haqq!
Peace and all Love’s Blessings to the little wing and all who flutter about her.
Sending good wishes.
J
Congratuations Irving, I will be coming here often in the hope that there shall be many updates. Very happy thoughts for mother and baby
Salaams Irving bhai,
Ma sha Allah. Mabruk! May Allah bless the new arrival with nothing but goodness, in this world and the next.
Wow! A grandfather eh? Ma sha Allah! Perhaps we should call you Poppa Dervish? (Only joking of course). ;)
Abdur Rahman
Or, perhaps Baba Dervish?
mash’allah! many congratulations from us and best wishes to your granddaughter.
LoA.
Oh, Irving, this is such marvelous news!
(I don’t think I’ve ever used the word “marvelous” before in writing, but this seems such an apposite time. =))
May your little butterfly granddaughter be granted a life filled with all that is beautiful and blessed and good! And may she be a source of joy to all those who know her, and may she spread light and the song of life wherever she goes. Ameen.
I think it’s so lovely that the poem you wrote thirty years ago is so fitting, once more.
Asalaamu alaikum.
Ah, Baba Irving has a good ring! And I am not opposed to using it since you have taught me in many ways as a father does.
Mabruk on your healthy beautiful granddaughter, may Allah bless her with iman, health, and everything she needs in this life and her future, ameen.
And this is such a lovely and sweet poem too. :)
Alf mabruk! Congrats on your grandchild. My parents say that the best time is for them is when they became grandparents. They no longer *discipline* but spoil their grandchildren. :)
Congratulations, “Baba Darvish”! Many blessings to the little one and the whole family! :)
Mazel tov! Best to baby, mother and the rest of the family.
Salaams bhai,
Alhamdulillah. May Allah raise her in His protection and Guidance.
Salaam Dear Brothers and Sisters:
Thank you all so much for the congratulations, kind words and prayers :) Children and grandchildren are indeed a blessing from God, a miracle of joy and love that flows without cease. And we can indeed spoil her and give her back lol. Ah, life.
Ya Haqq,
Baba Darvish
Congrats Brother Irving!! May Allah swt bless you and your family.
I wonder what are some of your favorite names for boys and girls… erm, no particular reason for asking. ok maybe. so yeah, what say you?
salaams :)
Well, dear Sister Nisa, I liked the name Quinn for a girl or boy, and sure, enough I just found out that they named the new baby Quinn :) They wanted an Irish name, since they are both of old Irish heritage. For a boy, they were thinking of Roman, which is a good boys name, and unique. I also like Quincy for both boy or girl, so I have a Q thing lol.
I personally like Sonia, my mother’s name, which means the pretty one, and Jack, my father’s name, both not used much any more.
Romeo is also a good boy’s name, though he may get beat up a lot lol.
So…. when are you expecting?
Ya Haqq!
Congratulations, our dear Darvish! I’m very happy for you – beautiful! Yes, indeed boys blahhh :)
Congratulations!
Salaams Brother Irving,
Hearty Congratulations to you and your family!!!
May Allah(swt) protect our lovely angel and guide her in His Loving Kindness. Ameen
Assalamu alaikum,
beautiful news matched by a beautiful poem, may happiness surround you all as brightly coloured butterflies.
Wassalamu alaikum
Salaam dear Irving
Congratulations! When I was born my Abi wrote me a poem. I still have it. He absolutely LOVED Mariam and I know exactly how you must feel right now. Little girls are such a blessing. Congratulations once again. I’m so weepy now.
Congratulations Irving.
Very happy to hear good tidings for you.
Congratulations! How absolutely wonderful! Alhamdulillah!
Salamaat dear Darvish,
how beautiful! Mabrook and thanks for the heartfelt and touching poem. Mashaallah; the little girl is lucky to have you as a grandpa :)
alhumduiallah!
that is wonderful news, congradulations!
Salaams Br. Irving – Hey, Quinn is a pretty name!! I’m actually due in couple of months with my first! I still dont know what gender it is and i certainly dont have a final name. I seem to have a thing for names with the letter “z.” Zain, Zayd, Zahara.. I really like Roman and Romeo, as well as, Rumi and layla … but nothing feels just right. I wonder if that was the case with anyone else. I’m hoping once i see the baby the name will just pop up! or else, i’ll have to call he/she Jr. for a while. heh.
thanks for the input!! :)
Romeo? Puhleaze Irving, have mercy on the kids in the playground.
:)
Ya Haqq!
Congradulations dear Brother Irving!
