The excellent Sufi resource and blog, Sufi News and Sufism World Report, has republished an interview with this darvish on the craft of writing in general, and on writing Master of the Jinn: A Sufi Novel in particular. You can read the interview by clicking here.
Those that struggle by the pen may find it interesting.
I hope this evening finds you well, by the grace and mercy of Allah.
Al hamdu lillah, as someone who struggles with themselves via the pen, this interview is very encouraging. Ma sha Allah. May God strengthen your (writing) arm!
Also, just a quick note, our worthy brother Yursil over at Mind, Body, Soul has launched a new collaborative blog project called themureeds.com. In essence, it’s rather like eteraz.org and is a place where followers of the spiritual path (and all those interested) can post material.
You might like to check it out and insha Allah, register.
Yursil contacted me in a comment on the last post (Nine Things) and invited me to join. I have therefore registered, and look forward to posting on it soon :)
And Alhamdulillah, your struggles with the pen are rewarded with beautiful poetry. Inshallah, you will keep struggling and bringing forth such lovely poesy.
I used to love reading fantasy stories but had to stop when I could not find anything good anymore. For many years, I had to stick to books on religion or work matters. So you can imagine how much I really love Master of the Jinn. It has in it all the elements I enjoy reading in 1 book – fantasy, some suspense, religious facts, Sufi practices, and most of all, the Sufi teachings of love. I’ll probably reread it a few more times while waiting for the sequel.
It was great to learn more about your life and your writing experiences, Irving.
I keep thinking about when I’m going to have time to read Master of the Jinn—I’m so backlogged with reading right now…sigh. But I have to get to it.
I must admit that I find a lot of similarities between how you described your novel and some vague ideas I had for my own next writing project, so it will be a real treat to read your tale.
Thank you all for the kind comments :) And Brother Shirazi, it was the wonderful blog Lightness of Being that won that category. (I actually voted for her also, though some kind person nominated this blog as well). Congratulations to all the winners!
Seeker94 (and Irving too), I know exactly what you mean. Now, though, I don’t have a problem with such things, as I see such things as ‘myth’ in the sense of providing possible explanations for things.
Salaams Irving bhai,
